📰 News we're reading

1. Sex trafficking is happening at hotels and truck stops in the Lehigh Valley, officials warn (lehighvalleylive.com) — Easton officials and local advocates are hosting a free town hall on Jan. 29 at the Boys and Girls Club of Easton to help residents recognize and respond to sex trafficking in the Lehigh Valley. You’ll hear from Easton’s city council, Northampton County prosecutors, Homeland Security, and nonprofit Bloom about warning signs, local risks at hotels and truck stops, and available resources for victims.

2. Domestic assault leads to 5-hour police standoff in Easton, cops say (lehighvalleylive.com) — Easton police say a local man was arrested after a five-hour standoff Sunday at a West St. Joseph’s Street home, following an alleged domestic assault. Negotiators and the Special Response Unit ultimately entered the house, found him hiding in a closet, and took him into custody on multiple assault and threat-related charges.

3. Easton announces $1.25 million in 2025 year-end grant funding for infrastructure, public safety, more (lehighvalleynews.com) — Easton has secured $1.25 million in new grants to upgrade public safety facilities, improve key streets like Larry Holmes Drive and South Side intersections, and enhance Scott Park and the Easton Winter Village. Most projects start in 2026, bringing safer crosswalks, modernized traffic signals, better waterfront access, and a new police evidence building out of the floodplain.

4. Calls made to amend Sunshine Act in Pennsylvania (altoonamirror.com) — Easton’s state Rep. Robert Freeman is pushing to tighten Pennsylvania’s Sunshine Act after a recent Supreme Court ruling made it easier for officials to add items to meeting agendas without advance notice. Working with a Republican colleague from Meadville, he wants clearer rules to protect the public’s ability to see and weigh in on government decisions.

5. Lehigh Valley food safety report: Rodents, mold, mildew, no hot water, close the bathroom door (mcall.com) — Recent state and city inspections found Easton spots like Domino’s on William Penn Highway, Quadrant Bookmart, Rod’s Dogs, Vera Café, TGI Friday’s, and Zekraft all in compliance with food safety rules. The wider Lehigh Valley report also flags issues such as rodents, mold, and hot-water problems at other regional establishments, which inspectors say must be corrected.
