Woodland Hills Alumni Shot & Killed in Armored Truck Robbery

A Woodland Hills High School alum was shot and killed Tuesday in an armored truck by his coworker, according to Pittsburgh police.

Michael Haines, 31, of East McKeesport had a gunshot wound to the back of the head. He graduated from in 1999, according to his personal Facebook page. He later attended Robert Morris University.

The Pittsburgh Bureau of Police Homicide Squad is investigating the homicide that occurred in the Strip District. At about 3:40 p.m., employees of GARDA located one of their vehicles which was parked underneath the 31st Street Bridge and got out to check on the occupants.

Two Pittsburgh detectives were in the area and stopped to assist. At that time, they discovered one of the occupants, identified as GARDA employee Haines, who was inside of the armored truck with a gunshot wound to the back of his head. Haines was pronounced dead at the scene and his firearm was missing.

A second GARDA employee, identified as 22-year-old Kenneth John Konias Jr. who was assigned to work with Haines, could not be located. Police broadcast a BOLO for Mr. Konias.

An investigation determined that Konias shot and killed his coworker in the armored vehicle and stole an undetermined amount of cash. After parking the vehicle underneath the 31st Street Bridge, Konias returned to his job site, which was a short distance away, got into a 2002 tan colored Ford Explorer PA Plate GZW-4572, and fled the area.

Konias eventually drove home to Dravosburg where he left his work jacket. Detectives recovered the jacket along at his home and a citizen turned in his cell phone which was found on Route 51.

Detectives reviewed the case with the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office and a warrant is being approved to include charges of criminal homicide, robbery, and theft.

The Pittsburgh Bureau of Police coordinated with multiple police agencies in Allegheny County and is currently working with the FBI on locating Konias. BOLO’s were also sent to the National Transportation Operations Center who notified by the airportsand the Allegheny County Emergency Operations who notified transportation facilities.

Konias is described as a 22-year-old, white, male, 6’0 tall, thin build, bald or very short hair. Konias’ last known address is in Dravosburg, PA. He is believed to be armed with two semi-automatic pistols and may be driving a tan Ford Explorer with Pennsylvania Plate GZW-4572. He is considered armed and dangerous.

GARDA is offering up to $100,000 for information on this case leading to the arrest and conviction of Konias, including information on his whereabouts.
