NORTH WALES, PA — A North Penn school district middle schooler was hospitalized after a fight on Wednesday afternoon, leading the school to be placed on a brief "hold," district officials and police said.

The fight at Pennbrook Middle School involved two students and occurred in the cafeteria during the seventh grade lunch, at about 1:20 p.m.

Circumstances leading up to the altercation are not clear. One student was hit in the head with a metal mug during the fight, Fox29 reports.

Police and emergency crews responded to the middle school and transported one student away to the hospital.

The "hold" kept all students in place for about eight minutes.

No other injuries were reported, but district officials and the school community are left wondering how to handle the fallout from the violence.

"The administration has been working with law enforcement and the families of the students involved to better understand what happened so that we can provide updated and accurate information," Superintendent Todd Bauer said in a letter sent home to families.

In the short term, North Penn is providing a "district wide" traumatic event response team to support students. "I also recognize that the other students present were alarmed and scared by what they witnessed," Bauer added.

Pennbrook Principal Nick Taylor will also be meeting with each grade on Thursday to discuss the support and further safety steps.

Bauer added that the rumors circulating that one of the students involved in the fight was previously expelled from another middle school and transferred to Pennbrook are false.
