FALLS TOWNSHIP, PA — After 48 years in law enforcement, Falls Township Police Chief William Wilcox is retiring on Monday.

Wilcox began his career with Falls Township on July 9, 1973 as a patrolman. In 1984, he was promoted to detective and rose to the rank of sergeant in 1985. In 2003, he was promoted to lieutenant and was sworn in as chief in 2007.

During the past 14 years, Wilcox created the township's Coffee With a Cop and Chief For a Day programs. During his tenure, the Falls department has maintained accreditation from the Pennsylvania Police Chief's Association.

"It is with great honor the officers and staff thank Chief Wilcox for his outstanding service and wish him all the best in his retirement," the department said in a social media post.

Lt. Nelson Whitney, a division commander in the department, will become acting chief on Sept. 1 and be named chief in January.

Whitney began working with the Falls Police Department in 1988.
