Middletown Declares June 19 'Juneteenth Freedom Day'

The date marks the anniversary of federal enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation, which called for an end to slavery.

LANGHORNE, PA — The Middletown Township Board of Supervisors is recognizing June 19, 2020, as "Juneteenth Freedom Day" in the township.

A proclamation issued by the board reads that supervisors "recognize the historical significance of this date in an effort to promote a better understanding of the past and present experiences of Black Americans so that we may work towards dismantling systemic injustice and racism in our society."

Juneteenth is recognized as the oldest commemoration of black liberation in the United States as the Emancipation Proclamation was enforced for the first time on June 19, 1865 in Galveston, Texas.
