422 Pothole Plague Intensifies, Full Repaving Planned For Spring

PennDOT crews are scrambling to address an uptick in complaints on the already dangerous stretch of road in Montgomery County.

LIMERICK TOWNSHIP, PA — Montgomery County is battling back against the potholes plaguing Route 422 this winter, with crews deployed last week and this week in an attempt to patch up a dangerous situation.

Commuters and residents have sounded the alarm over the worsening condition in recent weeks, adding to the more chronic issues 422 faces like extreme speeding and crippling congestion.

"To let you know, myself, I blew three or four tires on 422 last year," State Rep. Joe Ciresi said, noting that his office had fielded an uptick in complaints. "So this is personal to me as much as it is to all of you."

PennDOT crews are out "trying to fix as many potholes as they can," Ciresi added.

A five mile length of Route 422 will be repaved with new road in the coming months, covering Collegeville to the eastern part of Limerick Township.

PennDOT plans to open bids on the project in the spring. An exact timeline for when that repaving will happen is not yet known.

Variant weather makes potholes even more problematic. The freeze and thaw cycle is the primary trigger for potholes, and temperature swings have been drastic in the region over the past few months.

Ciresi urged residents to continue to contact his office to identify pothole issues as they arise. You can also report pothole issues with PennDOT here.
