Giant To Shut Down 2 Fulfillment Centers In Montgomery, Chester Counties

Nearly 200 jobs are impacted, officials said.

NORTH COVENTRY, PA — Two Giant supermarket fulfillment centers are shutting down for good in Montgomery and Chester counties. They're among a total of five closing in Pennsylvania this year, reflecting a continuously shifting grocery landscape in the Philadelphia region.

The Giant on 86 Glocker Way in North Coventry will close on March 20, while the store on 315 York Road in Willow Grove will shut down on April 3, according to a Pennsylvania Department of Labor Warn Notice.

The closures will lead to 189 job losses, including 89 in North Coventry and 105 in Willow Grove. However, the company says that impacted employees will be offered other roles within the company, or will have the opportunity to apply for other roles.

The fulfillment centers prepare online grocery orders.

"The difficult decisions to close these facilities were made after carefully considering customer trends and preferences for home delivery, where customers are increasingly expecting fast delivery, more assortment and delivery availability to meet their preferences," Ahold Delhaize, the owner of Giant, shared in a statement.

Online orders for these locations will now be filled directly in grocery stores, the company said.

Editor's note: a previous version of the story stated that the grocery stores themselves would shut down. Only the fulfillment centers will close.
