Construction Starts On Limerick Park, Completion Projected For 2024

Pickleball courts and ADA-compliant trails are just some of the improvements coming to Limerick Community Park, officials say.

LIMERICK, PA - Limerick Community Park is on its way to several major upgrades, officials say.

The first phase of construction on the park has begun, township officials said in a June 27 update, with the first phase to include several major upgrades and expansions to available activities at the park.

The first round of improvements will include bocce courts, ADA-compliant trails and walkways, pickleball courts, tennis courts, a ballfield and a multipurpose field, officials said. A new pedestrian entrance along Swamp Pike (including a pedestrian crossing with warning signals) as well as additional parking spaces are also part of the construction plan.

Limerick Township supervisors voted earlier this year on the $1.3 million improvement project funded in part by grants from the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

While the park was previously expected to be completed in about approximately three and a half months, as Patch reported, officials say phase I of construction is scheduled to be finished by late 2024.

The work will be performed by township public works employees and contractors.
Supervisor Michael M. McCloskey voted against the project in March because the playground was removed from the original project. He also questioned if the pickleball courts are necessary.

β€œIs pickleball trendy?” McCloskey asked during the March voting meeting. β€œWe don’t live in Florida.”

The popular sport has stirred up controversy in other Pennsylvania towns, with Chestnut Hill residents reporting that the noise of the game is so loud it violates the city’s noise ordinance, 6abc reported.
