Man Stabs Co-Worker During Traffic Patrol In East Caln: Police Update
Downingtown police said an argument over work assignments for traffic control during the Boot Road bridge project led to the stabbing.
DOWNINGTOWN, PA βA 63-year-old traffic controller stabbed a co-worker during an argument over work assignments at 8:48 a.m. Monday in the 1000 block of Boot Road, East Caln Township, Downingtown police said Tuesday.
The two workers were assigned to manage traffic control for an electrical infrastructure project on Boot Road when the argument escalated to the point that Mitchell Mayo, of Philadelphia, stabbed his co-worker, who was not identified, with a knife.
The electrical project was part of a $13.3 million project to replace the Boot Road Bridge over Amtrak in East Caln Township.
The name of the employer of the two workers was not available, according to police.
Greg Smore, PECO director of communications, said a security incident occurred between two contractors who were performing traffic control for a PennDOT project, which required PECO to relocate poles, on Boot and Quarry roads.
Robyn Briggs, community relations coordinator for PennDOT, said the state agency is not at liberty to comment on ongoing police investigations and hearings.
Mayo was arraigned before District Judge N. Paige Simmons on aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, possessing a weapon, and related offenses. He remains free on $25,000 bail to await a preliminary hearing.
The victim was transported to Paoli Hospital by Minquas Fire & EMS and was treated for non-life-threatening arm injuries.
Caln Township and East Brandywine Township police assisted in the investigation.

Bridge project
Meanwhile, crews are working this week on the pipe installation as part of the project to replace the Boot Road Bridge.
Lane closures are scheduled on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Quarry Road, between Boot Road and Lancaster Avenue for pipe installation.
Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work area as backups and delays may occur.
As part of the project, the road will be raised slightly to provide additional clearance to Amtrakβs facilities. A system used to supply electricity to the railroad will be placed under the bridge.
