Pennsylvania Turnpike Tolls Increase by 5 Percent, Beginning Monday

HARRISBURG, PA — Motorists driving on the Pennsylvania Turnpike will pay 5 percent more in tolls, effective Sunday, Jan. 8.

The 5 percent toll increase is needed to meet the turnpike’s funding and capital-improvement obligations.
The capital improvement projects include a $117 million project to widen the turnpike to six lanes along a two-mile stretch from the Valley Forge Interchange in Tredyffrin Township.

The project is ongoing and expected to be completed in 2025.
Turnpike officials said the two-mile stretch is the most widely traveled section of the 360-mile turnpike.

As a result of the upcoming increase, the most-common toll for a passenger vehicle will increase from $1.70 to $1.80 for E-ZPass customers and from $4.10 to $4.40 for Toll By Plate customers.

“We recognize our customers pay a premium to travel our roadway,” Mark Compton, turnpike CEO, said. “We are committed to maintain and enhance our 82-year-old system to provide a smooth, safe customer experience during every season of the year and hour of the day.”

The E-Z pass remains less costly than the toll-by-plate system, which began during the pandemic when toll collectors were eliminated.

New Penalties

A new state law, effective Nov. 3, 2022, allows PennDOT to suspend a driver’s license if a driver accumulated four or more overdue turnpike toll-by-plate bills or $250 more in unpaid bills.

“This law strengthens our efforts to hold violators accountable for failure to pay,” Compton said. “By far, most travelers do the right thing and pay their fair share. If you’re someone who believes there are no consequences for toll theft, we want you to know that you’re mistaken.”
