Royersford Man, Musician And Writer, Dies At 49

Royersford's Hugh P. McCann, a 1986 graduate of Spring-Ford, loved making music, writing, hiking with his boys, and fly fishing.

ROYERSFORD, PA โ€” Hugh P. McCann, Jr., 49, husband of Cassandra (Reese) McCann, of Woodstown, New Jersey, formerly Royersford, Pennsylvania, passed away on Thursday, February 8, 2018 in the Fox Chase Cancer Center. Born on December 23, 1968 in Philadelphia, he was the son of Helen (Carr) and Hugh P. McCann, Sr.

Hugh was a 1986 graduate of Spring-Ford High School and a graduate of Kutztown University with a BA in English. He had been employed as a director in IT.

A musician and writer, Hugh also had a love of technology, science and science fiction. He enjoyed learning languages and sought out opportunities to converse with native speakers. Hugh loved spending time in nature, especially hiking with his boys and fly fishing. He was a man of many interests including sound and music recording, photography, short story writing, painting, astronomy and cooking great food for his wife and family. He took great pride in his skills at Jeopardy each night and had hoped to compete on the show one day. He also enjoyed fast cars, martial arts and sports. He coached some youth sports teams in addition to playing in an adult soccer league.

There was a special place in Hugh's heart for his many nieces and nephews and all of their children. It was the highlight of his year to choose the perfect Christmas gift for all the kids. In addition to having a large and loving family, Hugh made friendships every place he went in life. He was a loyal friend to many and will be remembered for his unique ability to find humor in any situation.

During the years of his illness, Hugh remained hopeful and participated in numerous experimental studies at both Penn Medicine and Fox Chase Cancer Center. It was his hope that his input could benefit future cancer patients.

In addition to his wife and parents, Hugh is survived by his sons: Patrick McCann, III of Royersford, Walter McCann, of Woodstown, NJ and Michael McCann, of Woodstown, NJ; sisters: Kathleen, wife of William Preston, of Collegeville, PA and Patricia, wife of Anthony Bergandino, of Audubon, PA; brother-in-law: Bret Wade, Sr., of Malvern, PA; and many nieces and nephews, great nieces, great nephews and in-laws. He was preceded in death by a sister: Susan Wade.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral ceremony at the Cattermole - Klotzbach Funeral Home, 600 Washington Street, Royersford, Pennsylvania on Monday, February 12, 2018 at 7:30 pm. Friends will be received from 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Hugh's name to The Fox Chase Cancer Center.
