Spring City Reveals Streetscape Plans, New Website

Spring City Borough Council held its regular monthly meeting on Monday night. Council dealt with a number of issues, including their ongoing streetscape project, which is hitting its final phase.

Streetscape Project Phase 4

Drew Sonntag, representing the Urban Research and Development Corporation (URDC), presented plans for the last phase of the streetscape project. 

This phase will encompass the north side of Bridge Street from the river to Main Street and the west side of Main Street to Yost Avenue. 

The plans contain mostly curb and sidewalk improvements. Due to underground utilities and the number of driveways and utility poles on Bridge Street, there is only one tree to be planted.

Council authorized putting the project out to bid, contingent on URDC obtaining all the necessary approvals from PennDOT and the Chester County Planning Commission.

New Borough Website

Councilman Gene Sweeney announced that Spring City has a new website, now located at springcitypa.gov. 

Sweeney, a business teacher at Kutztown Middle School, has developed the site as an ongoing project for his students. The site is currently under construction, and while the new site is being built the old site can still be accessed at springcityboro.org.

Funds Authorized for Liberty Fire Company

Council voted to allocate the borough's share of the Act 205 foreign fire insurance tax premium funds to Liberty Fire Company. 

The fire company will receive $18,488.99 from the allocation. These funds can be used for benefits, equipment purchases, training, and other expenses, and are strictly audited by the state Auditor General.

Borough manager Dennis Rittenhouse said that the amount was "considerably lower than last year."

Rittenhouse said that 2011's allocation was approixmately $32,000. 

Other Notes

• The Spring City Halloween Parade will be held on October 23. Participants are asked to gather at Walnut Street and Main Street at 6:30pm for parade step-off at 7:00pm.
• Councilor Mike Hays noted that a fire last week damaged the offices of Rex Tax Services, the borough tax collector. 
• Council President Louis DiGuiseppe recognized Chief Tony Kuklinski for his actions during that same fire. He noted that Kuklinski had suffered some smoke inhalation but was back at work. The Pottstown Mercury reported on Friday that the chief helped rescue two people from the building.
