Township Residents Needed to Join Newtown Township's Historic Commission

Newtown Township Board of Supervisors is looking for a few interested individuals to join its Historic Commission. The ordinance to establish the Commission was almost 20 years in the making and was finally passed this year. The Commission will help the Township protect its inventory of historically rich resources that have become a staple of both Pennsylvania and American history.

The Newtown Township Historic Commission will consist of seven people who are residents of Newtown Township tasked with performing the following duties:

  • Identifying historic properties and structures in Newtown Township
  • Encouraging historic preservation by educating residents about historic structures and buildings in the township; assisting owners of historic structures with nomination to the National Registry of Historic Places; and making ownership of an historic structure affordable.
  • Discouraging demolition of historic structures, or if demolition cannot be avoided, preserving as much documentation and resources pertaining to the structure, as possible.

Current historic properties located in Newtown Township include:

Leonard B. Altieri, III, Esq., Newtown Township Supervisor, stated, “Preservation of historic resources and structures is a top directive in the Newton Township Strategic Plan. The Historic Preservation Ordinance will afford protections to our historic structures, establish a Historic Commission made of up residents, and create a foundation in the Township for additional protections. Like history itself, this ordinance is designed to continually evolve.”

Members of the Commission will meet monthly and serve a four-year term. Those interested in serving should contact Suzanne Wolanin at wolanins@newtowntownship.org or call 610-356-0200.
