Marple Memorial Post 805 Hosts American Legion's Constitutional Speech Contest

BROOMALL–The 2011-2012 American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program "A Constitutional Speech Contest" was held at on Thursday, Feb. 2.  Two students from the American Legion 8th District, Christopher Andersen from Spring City and Bridget Slattery from Radnor participated in the contest.

Each contestant delivered a prepared oration, as well as an oration on a randomly assigned constitutional topic. Slattery titled her speech "The
History of the Constitution" while Andersen impressed the judges with a speech titled, "The True Meaning of Political Science."

Since 1938, The American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program
has encouraged the nation's high school students to study the U.S. Constitution and to hone their public speaking skills. Since its inception, the contest has awarded well over $3 million in scholarships to the participants at the national level of competition.  

It currently awards $138,000 annually to department winners competing at the
national level. Many thousands of dollars in scholarships have been awarded at post, district and state levels.

Legionnaires of Marple Memorial Post 805 showed appreciation for the contestants for their outstanding presentations as well as the  judges and other officials for their dedication to the contest.
