Newtown Township Recognized By Heritage Commission Of Delaware County

Township is acknowledged for its passing of the Historic Preservation Ordinance.

Newtown Township Board of Supervisors is pleased to announce that the Township has been recognized by the Heritage Commission of Delaware County in the category of Preservation Planning, for its “…outstanding contributions to historic preservation.” Specifically, the Township is being acknowledged for its passing of the Historic Preservation Ordinance.

The Historic Preservation Ordinance led to the establishment of the Newtown Township Historic Commission. The Historic Commission is tasked with following duties:

  • Identifying historic properties and structures in Newtown Township
  • Encouraging historic preservation, by educating residents about historic structures and buildings in the township; assisting owners of historic structures with nomination to the National Registry of Historic Places; and making ownership of an historic structure affordable.
  • Discouraging demolition of historic structures, or if demolition cannot be avoided, preserving as much documentation and resources pertaining to the structure, as possible.

The Commission will assist the Township in protecting structures that are valuable to both Pennsylvania and American history. The Commission consists of seven individuals who live in Newtown Township and will serve a four-year term.

None of this would happen if it not were for the passage of the Historic Preservation Ordinance by the Township Board. This ordinance states that the preservation and protection of structures of historic merit are “public necessities and are in the interests of the health, prosperity and welfare of the people of the township.”

“Newtown Township is proud to receive this award from the Heritage Commission of Delaware County,” said Leonard B. Altieri, III, Esq., Chairman, Newtown Township Board of Supervisors. “Identifying and preserving historic properties and structures in the Township is a top priority for our Historic Commission. We encourage members of our community to learn more about the rich history of Newtown Township and our Historic Commission’s preservation efforts.”
