The Novavax vaccine is the fourth COVID-19 vaccine authorized in the United States and another tool in our expanding toolbox to fight the deadly virus.

On July 13, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration passed an emergency use authorization for the Novavax COVID-19 vaccine.

The Novavax COVID-19 vaccine is a 2-dose series for primary vaccination, meaning it is only for people who have never had a COVID-19 vaccine of any kind.

The vaccine contains the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and Matrix-M adjuvant.

Adjuvants are ingredients incorporated into some vaccines to enhance the immune response of the vaccinated individual.

The spike protein in the Novavax vaccine is produced in insect cells; the Matrix M-adjuvant contains saponin extracts from the bark of the Soapbark tree that is native to Chile.
