Police Blotter: Hubcap Plates Taken From Vehicle, DUI Arrest, Tires Fly Off Vehicle

Driver Arrested For DUI, Overturns Vehicle

On  Oct. 5 at approximately 2:45 a.m., responded to the 100 block of Bryn Mawr Avenue for a reported one-vehicle crash. Police received information that the driver of the vehicle was attempting to leave the scene of the accident, states the incident report. Upon arrival, police located the vehicle partially off the roadway facing west while occupying part of the northbound lane. The vehicle was overturned and the front of the driver’s wheel was caved in, rendering it incapable of being driven, said police. The driver, William Steward Jr., 50, of Newtown Square was unable to show an ID when requested, said police. When police asked if Steward had been drinking, he replied, “no,” but consented to a breathalyzer test. He was recorded to have a .076 percent blood alcohol content. Steward was able to show his vehicle registration information along with a prescription for Risperdal. also responded to the scene to assist in opening the vehicle doors, which allowed Steward to step out of the vehicle. He was transported to Riddle Memorial Hospital for minor lacerations to both hands. Further investigation from police revealed Steward had been traveling north on Bryn Mawr Avenue in the southbound lanes before losing control of the vehicle, eventually overturning it. A small, wall mailbox on Bryn Mawr Avenue was also damaged at the time of the incident. Steward was arrested and charged on four counts for driving under the influence, reckless driving, going above maximum speed limits and criminal mischief.

Purse Taken From Backseat of Van

On Oct. 2 at approximately 8:40 a.m., police responded to the parking lot of 3590 West Chester Pike in the Newtown Square Shopping Center for a reported theft from a vehicle. The owner of the vehicle told police that around 8:20 a.m. that morning she discovered that her little black wallet was stolen from inside of her van. About $20 in cash and her driver’s license were also in the wallet. According to the woman, the black purse was sitting in the back of her van in which both doors were unlocked. The value of the wallet was approximately $10.  Police are further investigating this incident.

Hubcaps, License Plates Stolen From Car

On Oct. 2 at approximately 5:15 p.m., police responded to the 400 block of Wooded Way in the development for a reported theft from a vehicle. The owner of the vehicle told police that around Sept. 25 he discovered that his license plate had been stolen off his vehicle. He also told police that around the same time an anonymous person posted a note in reference to his vehicle on the apartment message board. On Oct. 2 when he returned home, the man discovered his vehicle had been damaged and his hubcap plates had been taken. The value of the four hubcap plates are approximately $30. Police are further investigating this incident.

Spray Painted Store Window, Door Discovered

On Oct. 6 at approximately 7:45 a.m., police responded to on 19 South Newtown Street Road/Route 252 for criminal mischief discovered. Upon arrival, police met with the complainant, who told police that around 7:30 a.m. that morning, he discovered that the front display window and door of the building were spray painted beige. The man stated that the store was left secure and the front of the building was fine on Oct. 5 around 5:30 p.m. According to police, the damage is estimated between $200 and $400.

Tires Fly Off Car Due To Failed Brake System

On Sept. 28 at approximately 12:50 p.m., police responded to a one vehicle crash involving two people in the 3400 block of West Chester Pike/Route 3. The westbound lane was partially closed for less than 30 minutes. A 40-year-old man from Sharon Hill was driving west on Route 3 when the passenger-side axle, two dual tire/wheel assembly broke, causing the tire and wheel assembly to fly from the vehicle, said police. One tire assembly traveled across the eastbound lanes of Route 3 and came to rest on an embankment while the other set traveled north across an open grass area, hitting the sliding door of a ground-floor condominium causing damage to the door and door frames. The vehicle was towed from the scene.

Man Drives Over Curb Onto Lawn

On Sept. 30 at 11:47 a.m., police responded to southbound lanes of North Newtown Street Road/Route 252 for a one vehicle crash involving one person.  A 48-year-old man from Philadelphia was traveling south on Route 252 and as the driver approached the intersection of Winding Way, the driver applied the brakes, said police. The driver claims that the brake pedal went to the floor and he was forced to take evasive action to avoid striking other vehicles. The driver left the roadway and drove over a curb and through a fence line coming to a stop on the lawn. The vehicle was towed from the scene by and an inspection of the vehicle revealed an expired August 2011 inspection date. The damaged fence is owned by SAP America/Lyondell Chemical, said police.
