Reducing Gun Violence Through Legislation - May 17th - 7-8:30 p.m.

Local law enforcement agencies and lawmakers to speak at presentation

Congregation Ohev Shalom, in collaboration with the Interfaith Council of Southeastern Delaware County and the Southeastern Pennsylvania Coalition of Synagogues to Reduce Gun Violence, is hosting an educational session on legislative initiatives to reduce gun violence. The program, which is open to the public, will take place on Wednesday, May 17th from 7-8:30 p.m. at Ohev Shalom, 2 Chester Road (intersection of Rts. 252 & 320) in Wallingford, PA.

The presentation will focus on proposed legislation that creates Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPOs) and requires Universal Background Checks for gun ownership. Both pieces of legislation have been voted out of the House Judiciary Committee and will be considered by the full state House of Representatives in the immediate future.

Speakers include State Representative Jennifer O’Mara, the prime sponsor of the ERPOs legislation in the PA House of Representatives; State Representative Carol Kazeem who will be discussing the proposed universal background check legislation; and Delaware County District Attorney, Jack Stollsteimer and Nether Providence Police Chief David Splain who will talk about implementation of ERPOs. Also presenting will be Kenneth Certa, MD, Director of Acute Psychiatric Services, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, who will be discussing the mental health aspects associated with gun violence with an emphasis on suicide prevention.

“The time for thoughts and prayers has long since come and gone and we must, as a society, become educated in ways to protect ourselves from gun violence,” said David R. Hoffman, President of Ohev Shalom. “We have seen that the implementation of laws that alert law enforcement to an individual who poses a high risk to themselves or others and leads to removal of a gun for a reasonable period of time do, in fact, make us safer.”

The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required by Monday, May 15. To register go to www.ohev.net and click on the link under “Upcoming Events.” For more information, call 610.874.1465. Parking is available at the rear of the building.
