The idea for the mural started in late 2020 when Newtown Township Parks and Recreation Department approached the art teachers at the Marple Newtown School District about having students participate in an art mural project for one wall on the restroom building at Drexel Lodge Park.
Work on the mural began in 2021 and the goal of the project was to bridge the work of the elementary school students with the Newtown Township community. The theme of the mural is “Making Everyone Feel Welcome at Our Park”. What started as a project for one wall, soon encompassed the entire building.
While COVID made things difficult, the project always went forward. Now the mural has images and words that express belonging, kindness, acceptance, as well as multilingual expressions that convey these ideas.
