Driver In I-476 Crash Wednesday Was Under The Influence: State Police

A crash on Interstate 476 north in Delaware County closed part of the highway for about five hours Wednesday morning, snarling commuters.

DELAWARE COUNTY, PA — Authorities said a driver who was under the influence of illegal controlled substances caused a crash on Interstate 476 in Delaware County that closed the highway for about five hours Wednesday morning.

According to authorities, the crash occurred between Exit 9: PA 3 from Broomall/Upper Darby and Exit 13: US 30 for St. Davids/Villanova at about 3:38 a.m.

Broomall Firefighters and Pennsylvania State Police were called to the scene and upon their arrival found a two-vehicle accident involving an overturned dump truck and a sedan.

Those involved were evaluated and treated by EMS and transported to an area trauma center.

State police said they determined the sedan struck the dump truck in the rear axle, causing the truck to overturn.

The striking vehicle spun and came to a final rest on the left shoulder of the highway, and the dump truck overturned onto the left shoulder of the highway, causing it to spill a load of gravel onto the highway.

State police said the driver of the striking vehicle was found to be driving under the influence and in possession of illegal controlled substances at the time of the crash.

No one was hurt in the crash, authorities said.

Additional units from Radnor Fire Company/Radnor Professional Firefighters Association and Marple Township Ambulance Corps also responded to the crash.

Fire police units from around the region helped with traffic control at the Route 3-Interstate 476 interchange.

The crash also led to a fuel spill, per NBC10.

Authorities said the road was open again at 8:34 a.m.
