Escapee Crashes Stolen Vehicle After Chase In Delco: Police​

Police said the man escaped custody, stole a vehicle, led police on a chase, crashed the vehicle, ran off, and hid before being captured.

NETHER PROVIDENCE TOWNSHIP, PA — A man who escaped police custody in Delaware County was captured after a vehicle chase and crash Tuesday.

According to Nether Providence Police, officers were told of a police chase involving Upper Providence Police and Pennsylvania State Police on Baltimore Pike that was heading east into Nether Providence Township.

Police said Pennsylvania State Constables alerted state police earlier Tuesday that a prisoner escaped from their custody in state police jurisdiction, then stole a vehicle.

Action News reports the man was taken into custody Monday night after authorities saw him peering into a vehicle, then provided false identification to investigating officers and had a small amount of drugs on him. The man was reportedly charged with loitering, prowling, and drug violations.

Authorities tried to stop the stolen vehicle, but the driver sped off. He went east on Baltimore Pike through Media Borough and into Nether Providence, police said.

The vehicle crashed at Baltimore Pike and Turner Road, and the suspect ran off into the wooded area adjacent to Baltimore Pike, according to police.

Officers from various police departments joined the search for the suspect, and after 20 minutes he was taken into custody and turned over to state police.

During the incident, Nether Providence Police issued a community alert telling residents to shelter in place. The shelter-in-place advisory was lifted following the apprehension, and residents were told to resume normal activities.
