NEW HOPE, PA — More than 100 volunteers cleaned up trash and debris from the Delaware Canal on Saturday, as part of the annual Canal Clean-up Day.

The 2022 event, hosted by the Friends of the Delaware Canal, took place along the almost 60-mile Delaware Canal — recently named Pennsylvania's Trail of the Year.

"It was wonderful to see so many people who care come out to help clean up the Delaware Canal State Park," said Michael Ginder, executive director of the Friends of the Delaware Canal, in a statement to Patch. "Despite a wet start to the day, many sections of the park now sparkle after volunteer crews picked up and hauled out bag after bag of trash."

Volunteers from near and far included Katie Martens and Gabrielle Lent from the state's Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

They and other community members helped to clear trash, debris, and brush from the historic waterway and towpath at the Bristol Amish Market section of Clean Up Day.

After doing their part to clean the canal, volunteers met at the Locktender's House in New Hope for a celebration where Ginder and Brett Webber, board president of the Friends, thanked everyone for their hard work over light snack and drinks.

"The Friends would like to thank everyone who participated in and volunteered their time to Canal Clean-up Day 2022," Ginder said.
