NEWTOWN, PA — Officials in Newtown Borough are looking to gauge interest from local residents on transitioning to a single trash hauler.

The four companies currently operating in the borough include Waste Management, Mccullough Rubbish Removal, Republic Services and Whitetail Disposal. Borough officials are exploring the idea of contracting with one trash hauler as a cost-saving measure.

The issue was discussed by Newtown Borough Council at its Feb. 3 work session. Council President Tara Grunde-McLaughlin encouraged local residents to share their thoughts on the proposal.

Signing a multi-year contract with hauler could also give the borough negotiating power should the hauler renege on the deal, borough councilwoman Julia Woldorf said

"There's always issues with haulers and violating contracts," Woldorf said. "If we have a contract, we do have leverage."
