NEWTOWN, PA — Need something to brighten up your day? These virtual choir performances from Council Rock students may do the trick.
Students at the Council Rock School District began performing virtual choirs amid the coronavirus crisis, since schools were closed and they were forced to social distance from their peers.
Videos of the choirs, which involve students from both Council Rock North and Council Rock South, have been shared to YouTube.

Corey Axler, a teacher at Council Rock South, said the project began as a way to keep students musically engaged during the school closures due to the coronavirus outbreak. Schools have been closed since March 13, and will not reopen until at least April 6.
Axler said the project is aimed at providing "some hope and beauty to our community as well" during the difficult times.

"Now that students are unable to have a traditional musical ensemble experience, this concept is an alternative that students gravitate toward," he said.
Ryan Carlin, the choir director at Council Rock North, started the project by posting a virtual choir performance of his students singing the school's Alma Mater.
Axler followed with the song "Ounce of Hope," written by singer/songwriter Amy Engelhardt.
"The message of the song resonates now more than ever – we need to find hope through this. Our community is struggling on multiple levels, and our hope is that through the power of music we can provide an 'Ounce of Hope.'
Axler's project featured about 50 singers from the school's choir program. He hopes to expand it to include even more.
