Natural Gas Leak at West Marshall and Colonial Shuts Down West Norriton Neighborhood

Update 1:45 p.m.: A gas main was struck by a digging plumber at a home on Colonial Avenue at West Marshall Street, confirms homeowner Rich Russo. He said the plumber was working at his home at the time of the incident.

The gas main was struck, creating a rapid and abudant leak of natural gas, which is currently causing the odor and sounds in the area. Crews are blocking traffic in the area Marshall Street Elementary.

Emergency crews report no one was injured, but are standing by in the event of the need. Some crews were called away to a nearby car fire reported at Egypt and Main streets in West Norriton, which also necessitated emegency assistance.

PECO teams are looking to clog the main, but are unsure yet as to how long the repair will take. Fire teams from Jeffersonville are standing by at the scene.

A reported natural gas leak in the area of West Marshall and Colonial streets in West Norriton has the surrounding neighborhood and streets on a temporary lock-down. PECO and rescue crews are currently at the scene in order to fix the issue.

Side streets, including Colonial and Montgomery Avenue, are currently closed, as is West Marshall Street for several blocks in both directions, according to reports live from the scene. PECO is joined by fire police, West Norriton Police, and ambulance crews, which appear at this time to be standing by. No injuries have yet been reported.

Initial reports indicate that a plumber hit a gas line, causing the leak. The gushing gas can be heard in the area, and the strong odor of gas is also smelled by those at the scene.
