New NASD Budget Shows Smaller Tax Increase

The Norristown Area School District (NASD)  reveled an updated budget tonight for the coming school year. The 2012-13 budget was presented at the school board’s work session, according to the Times Herald.

The new budget shows updates that will mean a smaller increase for area taxpayers. According to the article, the average taxpayer will now have a 2.06 percent increase, instead of previously discussed increases of 2.49 percent.

When it all boils down, the savings would be the difference between a taxpayer doling out an additional $80 per year, instead of a $99 increase, the article said.

In addition to revisions, the changes include the elimination of 17 various teaching positions. The Herald reports that those include seven special education teachers, three family and consumer science teachers, one middle school health and physical education teacher, three math teachers, one English teacher, one art teacher, and one lead teacher at the high school.

“Although we eliminated 17 positions, only nine people will get furloughed,” said NASD Chief Financial Officer AnnMarie Rochricht to the Herald.

The budget will be displayed and likely adopted at the next school board meeting, scheduled according to the board's website, for Monday, June 25 at 7 p.m.
