Heavy Rains Swamp Parts of McCandless
The storms washed out a sidewalk adjacent to Duncan Avenue, and flooded a nearby business.
It seems like the never-ending story.
Another late afternoon round of storms swamped parts of McCandless Monday.
The result? Downed trees and power lines and in some cases, flooded roads.
The most visible damage was along Duncan Avenue, where a portion of the sidewalk near the Window and Kitchen Specialists shop collapsed into a sinkhole (video). The basement of the business, located at 1667 Duncan Avenue, was under water.
Also under up to two feet of water water was the flood-prone Duncan Heights Cemetery (video), where, according to O'Hara researcher Norman Meinert, at least 410 members of the military from the Civil War, Spanish American War, World War I and II are buried.
A local businessman, who did not want to be identified, blamed the flooding on development projects stretching from Duncan Avenue to UPMC Passavant.
Another busy stretch of highway, Rochester Road, was closed for a short while by a large tree which fell across all four lanes near the Ross/McCandless border.
