Marshall Township Celebrates 150th Birthday Saturday
The sesquicentennial celebration coincides with the township's annual community days celebration.
In the summer of 1863, the United States was torn apart by the civil war, the battle of Gettysburg was fought, and President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
1863 was also the year Marshall Township was born, and the event will be marked in a big way on Saturday, July 27, at the township's annual community day celebration at Knob Hill Park, located at 415 Knob Road in Wexford.
The 14 square miles that make up Marshall Township were previously an election precinct of Franklin Township. Marshall Township is named for Thomas Mercer Marshall, the well-known attorney by whom the proceedings to withdraw from Franklin Township were conducted before the court. For 40 years, in Pittsburgh, there was scarcely an important murder trial in which he did not conduct the defense, according to the Marshall Township web site. Â
In addition to rides, games, crafts, and food, this year's community days will include several historical exhibits, and even an Abe Lincoln impersonator, to help residents learn more about the history of their township.
Marshall Township Community Days begin at 4 p.m. and end with a fireworks display at dusk. See attached brochures for the complete list of activities.
