McCandless Recognized for Recycling Efforts

The Pennsylvania Waste Watchers program recognizes recycling, waste reduction, reuse, and composting programs in Pennsylvania that have exhibited exemplary performance.

The following information was provided by Maria Costanza, Communication Specialist/Recycling Coordinator for the Town of McCandless.

The Professional Recyclers of Pennsylvania (PROP) recognized the Town of McCandless and Ohio Township with Waste Watcher awards for their joint efforts in electronic recycling.

“The Town of McCandless greatly appreciates our ongoing partnership with Ohio Township in advancing recycling efforts in our communities,” said Town Manager Toby Cordek. “Our residents have embraced these joint efforts, resulting in significant amounts of electronic equipment being properly recycled.”

The Pennsylvania Waste Watchers program recognizes recycling, waste reduction, reuse, and composting programs in Pennsylvania that have exhibited exemplary performance. This is the second consecutive year both municipalities have been honored with this award. In 2012, over 17 tons of electronic waste was recovered from McCandless and Ohio Township.

This year, over 70 municipalities, counties, private businesses, individuals, and community organizations from throughout Pennsylvania are being recognized for going above and beyond what is mandated under Act 101 for their communities or programs. 

Act 101 – the Municipal Waste Planning, Recycling and Waste Reduction Act –has helped generate significant economic and environmental benefits for over 20 years now. Recycling has saved precious resources and energy, limited greenhouse emissions as well as other air and water pollutants.
