Police Officer Remembered For 40 Years Of Service In Northampton Twp.

NORTHAMPTON TOWNSHIP, PA —The Northampton Township Police Department has announced the passing of its most senior police officer Martin Comyn.

The police department said that Comyn, a long-time township resident, died after a battle with cancer.

"It is with heavy hearts that we announced his passing," the department said in its Facebook post. "Marty will be greatly missed."

The department said that Comyn began his "lifelong dedication to our township" in 1975.

In 1980, he was in the first graduating class of the Temple University Police Academy and then became a police officer in Rockledge Borough in 1982 until 1985.

Comyn joined the Northampton force as a police dispatcher in 1981 until 1986 when he was sworn in as a police officer and served until his untimely passing, the department said.

Besides his police work, Comyn also served in the township as a volunteer.

He was a member of the Northampton Township Volunteer Fire Company from 1975 through 1995.

During his tenure, Comyn served as a battalion chief in Holland for 12 years, deputy chief for one year, and then as chief for a year.

He also served as a member of the Trevose Heights Rescue Squad (now known as Tri-Hampton Rescue) from 1977-1979.

In terms of his work with the police department, Comyn served as the lead accident reconstructionist for several years.

"Marty was a behind-the-scenes guy who was instrumental in designing and developing our department's booking center. He took great pride in the work he did with Chief Clark and others in the development of our new headquarters," the department said. "Marty bestowed his great knowledge of accident investigations on many junior officers that they will utilize throughout their careers. Please keep Marty’s family in your thoughts and prayers."
