Dangerous Job: Perrysville Firefighters Explain Strategy for Transformer Fires

This dramatic video shows what can go wrong.

The hot and humid weather, combined with the almost daily arrival of afternoon thunderstorms, have triggered many transformer fires in the Ross and West View areas in recent weeks.

The Perrysville Volunteer Fire Company, Station 248, wanted to explain to residents the safe strategy for dealing with these types of fires, with a post on the station's Facebook page.

We thought it was interesting, and deserved some additional attention on North Hills Patch:

"If you are ever wondering why the fire department doesn't act on a transformer fire or burning power lines here is why (see video). Our job is to make sure no one gets near the hazard until the power company can de-energize the circuit. Remotely, the power company can try to re-energize a downed power line at any time, so a line that appears to be off could come alive at any time."
