Free Movie, Concert in the Park and a Flag Retirement Ceremony

Here is a list of fun, low-cost things to do near the North Hills this weekend.

FRIDAY, JUNE 17

Movies in the Park

Time: Dusk (Typically around 9 p.m.)

Place: Ohio Township Municipal Park, 325 Nicholson Road, Sewickley. 

About: Bring blankets or chairs to the free movie Mega Mind (PG-13), an animated action comedy starring Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill and Will Ferrell. The movie will be shown behind the Nature Center. In the event of rain, the movie will be moved inside the community center. Concessions such as sno-cones, popcorn, chips, cotton candy and nachos will be sold on site. Cash only.

The Movies in the Park Program is a joint program by the Townships of Ross, Marshall, Ohio & Richland and the Franklin Park Borough. Funding is from a government grant awarded by the Pennsylvania Recreation and Parks Society.


SATURDAY, JUNE 18

Flag Retirement Ceremony

Time: 11:30 a.m.

Place: , behind the cannon.

About: will perform a flag retirement ceremony for old or tattered American flags it has collected around Ross Township. Visitors are welcome to observe the ceremony. Flags can still be dropped off the day of the event or at a collection box in front of Post 80 on Sixth Avenue in Laurel Gardens.


SUNDAY, JUNE 19

Concert in the Park

Time: 7:30 p.m.

Place: Hartwood Acres Park, 200 Hartwood Acres

About: A free outdoor concert at Hartwood Acres Park Amphitheater, part of the Allegheny County Summer Concert Series. Sunday’s event is called Open Sky Microphone Night -- Undiscovered Pittsburgh singer songwriters perform their songs. Bring your own chairs and picnic blankets. Food and coolers are also permitted -- alcohol and pets are not.

The entrance for the concerts is on Middle Road. According to park managers, people generally start arriving for the concert series at about 6 p.m. The park is open all day, however, and guests may arrive even earlier.
