How North Hills Neighbors Travel to Work

Commuters in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area don't have it easy.

The 2011 Inrix Traffic Scorecard for cities listed Pittsburgh as 27th in the nation for traffic congestion, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. For some, who don't like the daily rush-hour hassle, looking for a job close to home is more important than a few more dollars in the paycheck.

The U.S. Census Bureau's most recent American Community Survey for 2007-11 provides a five-year estimate of how people in Ross Township and West View Borough get to work. Here are the figures for workers age 16 and older:

ROSS TOWNSHIP—15,978 total workers

• Car, truck or van—drove alone: 80.5 percent
• Car, truck or van—carpooled: 9.9 percent
• Public transportation (excluding taxicab): 3.8 percent
• Walked: 2.1 percent
• Other means: .5 percent
• Worked at home: 3.3 percent

WEST VIEW BOROUGH—3,766 total workers

• Car, truck or van—drove alone: 74.2 percent
• Car, truck or van—carpooled: 8.2 percent
• Public transportation (excluding taxicab): 9.6 percent
• Walked: 4.3 percent
• Other means: .8 percent
• Worked at home: 3 percent
