West View Community Day and a Free Outdoor Concert are Among Weekend's Offerings

Here is a list of fun, low-cost events near the North Hills.

SATURDAY, JUNE 11

West View Community Day

Time: 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

About: A petting zoo run by Greenfield Farms, inflatable slides, an obstacle course, and game booths will be available for kids of all ages. Access to the petting zoo and inflatables is $5 for unlimited play all day (cash only). Food and craft vendors will also be set up. "Last year parents brought blankets and set them up in the middle of the field and let the kids loose," said Debbie Andrews, treasurer and event planner for the West View Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors the annual event.

Parking is available along the streets. 

North Park Lakefest

Time: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

Place: North Park 

About: An all-day festival celebrating the re-opening of North Park Lake after two years of restoration work. Festivities include a 5K Run and Walk around the lake starting at 10 a.m. At the same time, bike rides for beginners and advanced bikers will be led by the Pittsburgh Trails Advocacy Group. Between noon and 3 p.m., there will be live music, balloons and face painting, fishing. Friends of North Park will also lead hikes at 1 p.m. and offer a scavenger hunt at 2:30 p.m. Admission to the swimming pool will be free all day. 

Boatloads of Bargains Community Yard Sale 

Time: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Place: , 206 Siebert Road

About: Donations have been collected over the last few weeks for the sale. Proceeds from the yard sale will be used to help expand the Berkeley Hills playground. Plans can be found on the website, www.edenchristianacademy.org. Ten percent of the proceeds will benefit thet.

 

SUNDAY, JUNE 12

Pittsburgh Opera & Broadway Tunes 

Time: 7:30 p.m.

Place: Hartwood Acres Park, 200 Hartwood Acres

About: A free outdoor concert at Hartwood Acres Park Amphitheater, part of the Allegheny County Summer Concert Series. Bring your own chairs and picnic blankets. Food and coolers are also permitted -- alcohol and pets are not. 

The entrance for the concerts is on Middle Road. According to park managers, people generally start arriving for the concert series at about 6 p.m. The park is open all day, however, and guests may arrive even earlier.
