NHCO Events Honor MLK, Benefit Local Senior Citizens

Several service projects are being offered Jan. 16 in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

North Hills Community Outreach will facilitate several service projects geared toward helping senior citizens on Jan. 16 in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and his legacy of service.

NHCO will have a Valentine’s Day card-making event from 10 a.m. to noon at its main office at 1975 Ferguson Road in Hampton. About 25 young adults from North Hills-based Girl and Boy Scout troops will be crafting unique cards. The handmade cards will be delivered with stuffed animals the week prior to Valentine’s Day to about 65 senior citizens. Volunteers are needed to assist with the delivery.

Duquesne Light employees will attend a Safety for Seniors training at NHCO’s Millvale Satellite and then conduct home safety checks for senior citizens in the area. Besides checking for safety hazards, volunteers can install smoke alarms, nightlights, bathtub mats and flashlights.

For the fourth year, FedEx employees are teaming with local teenagers to visit senior citizens living in apartment complexes in Blawnox Borough.

About 20 middle-school students involved with the YWCA Tech Gyrls program will partner with 10 FedEx employee mentors in this intergenerational project that alleviates loneliness for the senior citizens. The project provides the elders with an opportunity to share their wisdom and stories with younger generations.
