Pittsburgh Regatta, Dora the Explorer, and Ross Independence Day are among the weekend's featured events
A look at fun, low-cost things to do over the weekend near the North Hills.

SATURDAY, JUNE 2
Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta
Time: Starts at noon and activities will go on all weekend and through Monday, July 4.
Place: 101 Commonwealth Place, Pittsburgh (Point State Park and the North Shore)
About: Enjoy the largest inland regatta event in the United States. Saturday’s schedule includes face painters, balloon artists and inflatables (Point State Park, noon - 9 p.m.), a Frisbee dog show (Point State Park, 4:30 p.m.), skateboarding shows (Point State Park, 3:30 p.m., 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.) and a variety of live music and acts starting at 1 p.m. Click here for the day’s full schedule or look at Sunday’s line up and Monday’s schedule.
Dora the Explorer Live!
Time: 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday
Place: Pittsburgh Children’s Museum, 10 Children’s Way, North Side
About: See this hour-long live show featuring all of your favorite characters from the Nickelodeon™ hit show including Diego, Boots, Swiper and more! Help Dora navigate a high seas adventure - read the map, sing, learn words and count - to navigate over Purple Mountain and Silly Singing Bridge, confront the Pirate Piggies and reach the treasure. Show tickets are $12 for members & $20 for non-members.
SUNDAY, JUNE 3
Ross Township's 15th Annual Independence Day Celebration
Time: 11:30 a.m. -- 1 a.m.
Place: and
About: Car Cruise begins at 11 a.m. at North Hills Senior High School. The annual parade begins at 4 p.m. at and proceeds north on Perry Highway, ending at Linley Lane.
After the parade, there will be arts and crafts for kids at the Ross Community Center as well as face painting, a wide variety of games, inflatable activities, and food at the concession stand. From 7 to 9:30 p.m. entertainment by Kardaz! Immediately after the band, Pyrotechno will display fireworks.
Parking will be available in the parking lot along McKnight Road. A shuttle will run from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. between the activities and the Ross Township Community Center.
Movies in the Park
Time: Immediately after the fireworks, around 9:30 p.m.
Place: 1000 Ross Municipal Drive
About: Bring blankets or chairs to the free movie Avatar (PG-13), a sci-fi film directed by James Cameron, starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver.
The Movies in the Park Program is a joint program by the townships of Ross, Marshall, Ohio & Richland and the Franklin Park Borough. Funding is from a government grant awarded by the Pennsylvania Recreation and Parks Society.
Concert in the Park
Time: 8:15 p.m.
Place: Hartwood Acres Park, 200 Hartwood Acres
About: A free outdoor concert at Hartwood Acres Park Amphitheater, part of the Allegheny County Summer Concert Series. Sunday’s event features the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Bring your own chairs and picnic blankets. Food and coolers are also permitted.
The entrance for the concerts is on Middle Road. According to park managers, people generally start arriving for the concert series at about 6 p.m. The park is open all day, and guests may arrive earlier.
