Red Cross Offers Water Safety Course for Instructors

Sessions will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 11-14 at North Hills Senior High School.

The American Red Cross will hold a Water Safety Instructor course specifically for those who plan on teaching aquatic courses this summer. It will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m July 11-14 at l.

Registration is being accepted up until the the class starts. Those who complete the course will be qualified to teach water safety, including Basic Water Rescue and Personal Water Safety courses, six levels of Learn-To-Swim, three levels of Preschool Aquatics and two levels of Parent and Child Aquatics.

To be eligible for this course, students must be at least 16 and have a Red Cross Fundamentals of Instructor Training certificate issued within the last year. Additionally, students must have successfully completed the pre-course session, which will be facilitated by the instructor on the first day of the course.

The pre-course session will test the students' ability to lie on their backs in deep water (floating or sculling) and tread water for one minute each. It will also test their ability to swim the following strokes:

  • Front crawl — 25 yards
  • Back crawl — 25 yards
  • Breaststroke — 25 yards
  • Elementary backstroke — 25 yards
  • Sidestroke — 25 yards
  • Butterfly — 15 yards
