Ross Bar Owner Gives Patrons Free Wings After Improbable Sports Win

A popular Pittsburgh bar gave away free chicken wings to its patrons after Pitt beat Duke in basketball Saturday.

PITTSBURGH, PA — There wasn't much to lose.

The University of Pittsburgh's men basketball team was 13-point underdogs to Duke on Saturday and playing on the road. Duke was ranked the nation's seventh-best team at the time; Pitt largely has been mediocre this season and has little chance of reaching a second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.

So Mike Manning of Ross, the owner of Archie's bar in Pittsburgh's South Side, went on social media and promised the customers of his East Carson Street tavern free wings if the Panthers pulled off a wildly improbable victory. All of the customers.

Guess what? Pitt won, 80-76, their first victory at Duke's Cameron Indoor Stadium since 1979.

Several dozen orders of wings were given away, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.

Pitt forward Zack Austin asked on social media if the team also would be provided with the free wings. There is no word yet on whether Archie's, known for its wings, will grant the request.
