An elimination format cuts a field of 20 down to a single winner over the course of each season. In a usual episode, two contestants are nominated for elimination, with Ramsay then axing one from the show.

The stakes of the competition are high. The winner takes home a $250,000 grand prize as well chef positions at Ramsay restaurants across the country, a nice line to have on a culinary-focused resume.
