Ross Small Business Spotlight: Madison Ave Specialty Cakes

Where else can you find someone to bake a leg lamp cake?

In the six months since she opened Madison Ave Specialty Cakes  at 944 Perry Highway, Nancy Becker has baked a lot of unusual cakes for all types of events, including weddings, milestone birthdays, and retirement parties.

So she's seen it all. Or thought she had until a customer from Wexford ordered a cake for a party themed around the movie "A Christmas Story." (click on YouTube video)

"He wanted a leg lamp cake, just like the one in the movie," she said.

So how did she do it?

"We used a mannequin leg for the base, I put fondant on top of that, and I hand-piped the fishnet stockings and then the actual cake was the lampshade," she said. "Then we did black licorice for the fringe. I had to say that was the craziest cake we've ever done."

Becker also likes to invite customers to be part of the creative process. For St. Patrick's Day, for instance, she will be hosting a cookie bouquet class.

"We put the cookies on sticks, then we give everybody a container, and then we put paper shred inside, and then they make a nice bouquet," she said. "We did them for Valentine's Day, everybody seems to enjoy them. Probably do them for Easter, too."
