West View Sixth-Graders Show Knowledge of Aztecs During Annual Market
Each student was responsible for making or creating the product they sold at the market.
West View Elementary sixth-grade students held the annual Aztec Market on March 1. Each student sold handmade wares and food inspired by their recent study of Aztec culture during a unit focusing on early civilizations of the Americas.
The market is the culminating activity for the unit and offers products such as headdresses, shields, musical instruments, jewelry, food and dream catchers among many other options. Visitors to the market shopped with chocolate chips to represent cacao beans. More than 70 students spent three weeks preparing for the event.

Each student was responsible for making or creating the product they sold at the market. The products related to the Aztecs in some way. For example, a student made jewelry because many Aztecs wore jewelry as a sign of beauty and wealth, or they made a warrior shield because the Aztecs used them to protect themselves during battle.
In addition to their products, the students made Aztec ponchos out of paper and designed them with pictures and symbols representing the Aztecs. They also made two signs - an open/closed sign and one showing their product name and price in cacao beans of their product. Each student also was responsible for writing a paper describing their product and explaining how it relates to the Aztec civilization.
