National Weather Service Says Snow Advisory in Effect Until 7 p.m.

Few weather-related accidents reported in Ross and West View Tuesday as of 6 p.m. — the snow instead provided the first opportunity this year to bring out the sleds.

Snow!

That's right, snow. Finally.

The National Weather Service's winter weather advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m.

"The combination of snow showers and blowing snow can still cause hazardous travel conditions through the evening," the weather service website states. "Nighttime conditions will add to the hazard impacts as increased traffic can cause ice to develop on untreated pavements beneath the packed-down snow."

Throughout the day Tuesday, icy road conditions led to slower commutes and accidents around the North Hills — but in Ross Township and West View, few problems were reported.

In preparation for the bands of snow that moved across Western Pennsylvania much of the day, Ross Township's Public Works Department started out early, just after midnight, and with a crew of about 15 kept the township roads clear most of the day, according to Pete Castellano, assistant public works director.

"There's really been no problems," Castellano said at about 4 p.m. Tuesday.

He said the crews planned to stay out through the evening commute times just to be safe.

In West View, the fresh snow drew eager sled riders to Bronx Field after school.

Tom McDowell brought his granddaughter, Keala Glaser, 5, out at the close of the day at West View Elementary. They tested the hill first — and discovered there wasn't quite enough snow to keep from hitting a muddy spot here and there.

It didn't deter them, though.

"As soon as she saw snow, she wanted to come sled ride," McDowell said.
