TRAPPE, PA — A local volunteer fire department will be able to construct a new firehouse thanks to a million-dollar state grant.

The Trappe Fire Co. has been awarded $1 million to help with the building of a new fire department facility in this central Montgomery County community.

The grant dollars were announced by State Reps. Joe Webster and Joe Ciresi, both Montgomery County Democrats.

The funding will help with a construction project to build a new, 15,000-square-foot facility on West 5th Avenue in Trappe, a small Montgomery County borough that is located near Collegeville.

The goal of the new facility, fire department officials say, is to improve outdated space and amenities offered through the existing firehouse.

"This funding will go toward an important project to support the growing needs of the Trappe community and the region," Ciresi said in a statement. "As a state, we should give our dedicated and selfless first responders the tools they need to keep us safe. I'm proud to support this investment in our public safety infrastructure and help provide a modern base of operations for the Trappe Fire Company."

Webster added that he was happy to support funding for the project, which will help to make Trappe and the surrounding communities served by the volunteer first responders safer.

The fire company says that it will continue its regional partnerships with neighboring municipalities, and the new firehouse would serve as a regional resource to bring together various emergency response partners to help reduce overall costs and maintain critical response times.

The money for the grant comes from the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program, which is administered through Pennsylvania's Office of the Budget for the acquisition and construction of regional improvement projects designed to have a cultural, civic, historical or economic benefit.

The Trappe Fire Company earlier this year lost its young chief, Branden Sisca, when Sisca died in the line of duty.

Sisca, an expecting father and husband, was killed while working his day job as a Pennsylvania State Police trooper after being struck by a vehicle while trying to help a stranded pedestrian along Interstate 95 in Philadelphia.
