Car Crash Brings Down Utility Pole, Causes Brush Fire & Shed Blaze In Montco

A car crashed into a utility pole Sunday in Montgomery County, causing a brush fire to break out that extended to a shed and tractor.

SKIPPACK TOWNSHIP, PA — A motor vehicle accident this weekend brought down a utility pole and caused a brush fire to break out that eventually spread to a shed and a piece of farm equipment that was located on nearby property, according to local fire officials.

The Skippack Fire Company said crews were dispatched to a call for a vehicle accident on Sunday afternoon, with reports that a car had crashed into a utility pole and caused a fire to break out.

The spark created a brush fire that ultimately spread to a nearby shed and a tractor, according to the fire company.

Fire officials in Skippack said that due to the extreme heat this weekend, and the risk of the blaze expanding beyond a brush fire, additional crews from other nearby fire departments were called to the scene to assist Skippack fire personnel.

The fires were ultimately placed under control.

Skippack says it received help from firefighters with the Worcester Volunteer Fire Department, the Harleysville Community Fire Company, Perkiomen Township Fire Company, and Towamencin Volunteer Fire Company.

Also helping out at the scene were emergency responders with Skippack Emergency Medical Services and the Lower Providence Community Center Ambulance Corps.

Meanwhile, firefighters had to be sent to another incident in Skippack Township at roughly the same time as the first one for a reported additional woods fire that was caused by a tree laying across power lines, according to the Skippack Fire Company.

That second incident occurred around 5 in the afternoon Sunday on the 3700 block of Thompson Drive near Skippack Pike (State Route 73), fire officials stated.

The Perkiomen Township Fire Company, which assisted with the second call, said that fire crews were able to safely get around the tree in order to address the field fire.

It took firefighters about a half-hour to place that fire under control.

The scorching temperatures and dry atmosphere across the region this weekend created the potential for dangerous fires.
