Phoenixville, PA-based American Youth Literacy Foundation, 501 c 3, (AYLF) a nationwide charitable non-profit dedicated to eradicating illiteracy in America, is giving away Kindles both locally, and across the country in an effort to teach every child how to read.

"Literacy is, and should be universally recognized as, a fundamental human right," says Mr. R. Kali Woodward, J.D., Founder and Executive Director of the 100% all-volunteer foundation, started in 2008 in Collegeville, PA. "Yet more than 20 million children have dropped out of public school in the last 20 years, completely illiterate. We are about to change all of that."

In an effort to reverse the children's literacy crisis in America and to close the education gap AND the digital divide between and among all children nationwide, AYLF has built an entirely, 100% FREE, patented "Learn to Read" app called the FUNetix 12 Hour Reading App, that teaches virtually any child how to read in just 12 hours, with minimal adult supervision and no teaching required. The app is a simulated 1-on-1 tutoring experience with 40 easy modules that take children on a "Wonderful Journey to Learn a Secret Code and Find Hidden Treasure." With over 2,000 screens of linear content, the app is fully narrated, tastefully animated and captures the imagination, as children learn the fundamentals of phonics, phonemic awareness and the English written code.

The app is a result of 18 years of clinical research in the Philadelphia area and nationwide, and earned a patent on the application of the time-tested "Diacritic Method," to the English language, after a hard fought, nine year prosecution with the patent office, and the generous pro bono support of Philadelphia-based Duane Morris LLP, an internationally recognized, top intellectual property law firm. Children learn how to read from the ABC's to a 2nd grade reading level in just 12 hours, reducing the traditional time it takes by a factor of 10X. An entire description of the science-based app can be seen on the AYLF website at www.FUNetix.org.

The app is 100% free. There is no login, no password, and no in-app purchases. The app is completely dedicated to teaching every child in America how to read. According to Woodward, a former Spanish and Arabic linguist for the 101st Airborne, whose own son struggled early on with reading (which directly led to the creation of the FUNetix curriculum and the app), "If every child can learn how to read in 12 hours, as we've been showing now for 18 years, then no child in America should finish 3rd grade without being able to read. We've created the tool. It's available for free download worldwide; and for kids who don't have devices, we're giving them Kindles so they can also become literate in just 12 hours of total use time."

Also according to Woodward, the success of the program depends on the ability to scale and to bring in local businesses, other nonprofits and NGO's, donors and philanthropists, to help cover the costs, which are $100 per complete Kindle package, including Kindle Fire 7, child friendly protective cover, placement, and up to fourteen weeks of personal support from a local FUNetix community liaison. Lansdale-based Frog Hollow Racquet Club has made a generous donation to the cause; and the first Kindles will be going out as soon as qualified families are contacted. To apply for a free Kindle, families with a 6-9 year old child who can't read (or is struggling with reading), and who don't have a device of their own, can fill out this form: bit.ly/mykindle10551 (or another caring adult can fill out the form for them).

"Our mission is to ensure that every child in America learns how to read by the end of 3rd grade. We hope to give away at least 20,000 Kindles by May and we are actively pursuing local small, medium and major sponsors in multiple pilot cities including Baltimore, Philadelphia, Albuquerque, Los Angeles and Chicago, to make this happen." Said Woodward. "The Kindle program will also help us raise awareness, so that millions more families will download the app on any smartphone, tablet or Kindle Fire (version 7 or later), to ensure their child gets the boost they need to get to a 2nd grade reading level, and so that they can jump into grade level educational content and become anything they want to in life. Everything begins with literacy."
