Live Burn Drill Conducted By Montco And Delco Volunteer Firefighters
A volunteer Montco fire department joined a Delaware County counterpart in practicing their skills in a live fire scenario last week.

CONSHOHOCKEN, PA — Some local volunteer firefighters gathered together in this Montgomery County borough late last week to practice their skills in a real-life scenario.
Fire crews with the Perkiomen Township Fire Company joined together with volunteers from Delaware County's Collingdale Fire Company-Station 33 to participate in a live burn drill at the Montgomery County Fire Academy in Conshohocken on Nov. 10, according to the first responders.
Live burn drills give volunteer firefighters a chance to test their skills in "controlled environments under realistic conditions," according to the Perkiomen Township Fire Company, which posted photos of their training on social media.

"Great teamwork and thanks to the Montgomery County Fire Academy for the use of their facility," the department commented on Facebook.
During a live burn drill, firefighters set fire to a structure and then put out the blaze. It is all part of training that firefighters, especially volunteers who work other day jobs, must undergo in order to be better prepared to extinguish fires in actual scenarios.
"Live fire training drills teach trainees how to think clearly and act calmly under the stress of an emergency situation when lives are at stake and every second counts. They must effectively use their training to solve the unique problems of a fire emergency while maintaining their own safety as well as that of their fellow firefighters and any other people involved in the fire scene," reads an article on the website FireRescue1. "This includes operating heavy equipment and tools which can cause serious injury if used improperly. There's no better way to give students a hands-on lesson in firefighting than through this kind of controlled, supervised exercise."
