Back in June of last year, we were out visiting our son who was house sitting in Evergreen, Colorado. We were enjoying a local rodeo event that day when we stumbled (literally) into a place called Little Bear there on the main drag for a beverage or three...

What to our wondering ears should appear, but a cool band that was performing that night called The Barlow - Now, that band... In that Cowboy bar... In those mountains... Was pure Colorado Country. Apparently, that's the sound they've been making and refining since 2017, combining Red Dirt, Americana, outlaw country and guitar-heavy Southern rock into songs that are as rugged as the band's Colorado home.

So we were thrilled when a new album from these talented rockers showed up in our mailbox back here in Pennsylvania a few weeks ago... That record, High Spirits, is their follow-up to 2022’s New Year, Old Me, was created by the band with no constraints, no boundaries, and the freedom to explore and create songs that endeavor to connect with people in a meaningful way. That’s partly why this latest release has such a laid-back vibe. The band's lead vocalist & guitarist Shea Boynton, along with bandmates Ben Richter (drums), Jason Berner (bass), and Brad Johnson (guitar) – plus a little help from Craig Bennington (pedal steel, banjo) and Andy Schneider (keyboards) – crafted an album that flows effortlessly from one song to the next. With clean harmonies, catchy melodies, and solid heartland country-rock rhythms, these songs feel like a breath of fresh air.

Turns out, High Spirits was recorded in two sessions in 2023 and 2024 just up the road a piece from Little Bear at Evergroove Studio right there in Evergreen. It was produced by Bennington and the band, engineered by Athena Wilkinson and Brad Smalling at Evergroove, and mixed and mastered by Wes Sharon at 115 Recording in Norman, Oklahoma which is probably where that red dirt grit was added to the flavor of these tunes!

Not much chance to see the band out this way anytime soon (although they ARE touring & adding dates across the summer months as we speak), but if you get the itch to jet out to Denver International, the band is set to play back at Little Bear on June 26th - Well worth the travel time & expense involved... lol!
