New Music from The Wildwoods - Dear Meadowlark

A wonderfully surprising release from the Nebraska-based band becomes this writer's current favorite go-to listen...

One of the joys of this job is having something arrive at your door - totally unsolicited & unknown to you - that totally blows you away upon listening... Such was the case when the record Dear Meadowlark from The Wildwoods was delivered to my mailbox!

This folk-Americana trio from Lincoln, Nebraska, is known for their seamless blend of acoustic instrumentation, intricate harmonies, and soul-stirring songwriting. Comprised of Chloe Gose (violin), Noah Gose (guitar), and Andrew Vaggalis (upright bass), the band draws inspiration from legends like Gillian Welch, Andrew Bird, and Sierra Ferrell, offering a fresh yet familiar presence in today’s folk landscape. For my ears, it a bit of Alison Krauss & Union Station mixed with some Nickel Creek energy - A very good combination indeed!

The first single released from the record, "Sweet Niobrara" is a lilting and lightly foot-tapping ode to the village in Knox County, Nebraska weaves picturesque lyrics with a spry, folky-bluegrass beat.

"Poster Child" features a laid-back yet driving 12/8 rhythm with playful string arrangements, creating an organic, orchestral feel reminiscent of Nick Drake and Joni Mitchell-esque tones.

"'Hideaway' captures the tension between outward appearances and inner struggles, exploring themes of isolation, identity, and the search for meaning," explained singer, songwriter and guitarist Noah Gose in a recent interview... "The song reflects on the disconnect between people, even in shared spaces, and critiques the facades we maintain to seek validation. "Hideaway" delves into the pain of self-doubt and the longing for escape. The recurring theme of finding a refuge highlights the desire for authenticity and solace amidst chaos. It’s an exploration of the human experience, balancing raw emotion with a quiet yearning for connection and peace." The song blends The Wildwoods’ signature three-part harmonies with a driving folk/Americana rhythm, creating a sound that feels both intimate and expansive. Reminiscent of artists like Fleetwood Mac and America, its dynamic arrangement balances gentle acoustic instrumentation with a steady, forward momentum, capturing a timeless yet modern feel.

Inspired by Nebraska’s vast landscapes, "I Will Follow You to Willow" is a heartfelt exploration of devotion, self-worth, and the quiet strength of standing by someone through their moments of doubt. With driving rhythms, soaring violin, and rich three-part harmonies, the song balances intensity and warmth, blending timeless folk traditions with a cinematic, modern edge; and evokes the expansive yet intimate soundscapes of Fleet Foxes, Watchhouse, and The Milk Carton Kids.

Seriously a band you wanna spend some time listening to if you can...
