Conshy on a Roll

Conshohocken held its 62nd annual Soap Box Derby the morning of July 4.

Residents watched as about 30 kids raced gravity powered-cars, with company sponsorship, down Fayette Street, two at a time on the morning of July 4.

It was Conshohocken's 62nd annual Soap Box Derby, sponsored by the Conshohocken AMBUCS.

Organizers set up a staging area between 8th and 9th avenues and rolled the cars to the starting line at the corner of 8th and Fayette.

Leo Costello, a lifelong Conshohocken resident and the derby’s assistant director said a year’s worth of planning goes into the event. Costello was stationed at the starting line, inspecting vehicles before he pulled the lever, which sent the cars down the hill.

Lifelong resident Glen Smith was one of a handful of volunteers who helped set up for the event Wednesday night. Smith said he has two sons participating in the race — a 12 year old and an 11 year old. Both have been involved in the derby for three years.

“There’s a lot of work involved with the cars and with the setup of the race, but it’s all worth it. It’s all for the kids,” Smith said.
