Lindsay elected first Black female president of Pottstown Borough Council (readingeagle.com) — Pottstown Borough Council has chosen Trenita Lindsay as its new president, making her the first Black woman to lead the council and setting a new direction for local leadership. She’s prioritizing fixing High Street’s back-in parking, tackling abandoned and vacant buildings, and getting more residents involved in borough decisions and community events.
   

2. Pottstown Sgt. Mike Ponto retires after 28 years (pottsmerc.com subscription) — Longtime Pottstown Police Sgt. Michael Ponto has retired after 28 years of service and was honored with a standing ovation at this week’s borough council meeting. Local leaders praised his integrity and lifesaving actions, including a 2017 shooting response where officials said his quick work likely saved a victim’s life.
   

3. How Montgomery County United to Build New Homeless Shelters (vista.today) — Montgomery County is planning a new emergency homeless shelter in Pottstown as part of a three-site network expected by the end of 2025, adding to facilities in Lansdale and Norristown. The project will bring badly needed beds to a county where homelessness is rising, backed by bipartisan commissioners and substantial county funding.

Mercury Basketball Roundup (Jan. 8): Norristown picks up first ‘W' of season while Methacton, PJP each win 10th straight (pottsmerc.com subscription) — Pottstown boys and girls basketball both took tough PAC crossover losses Thursday, with the boys falling to Pope John Paul II and the girls topped by Phoenixville. Local standouts like Elias Butler and Jayanna Hill still posted strong scoring nights as the Trojans continue a challenging midseason stretch that includes upcoming road trips to School of the Future and Owen J. Roberts.
   

5. Man Charged In Fatal PA Tractor-Trailer Crash That Killed Pedestrian: DA (dailyvoice.com) — A 37-year-old Pottstown man has been charged with reckless endangerment and reckless driving after a 2025 tractor-trailer crash in Coopersburg that killed a pedestrian. Investigators say video showed him driving with his eyes closed, but prosecutors concluded the victim’s decision to cross a dark stretch of Route 309 also contributed, leading them not to pursue more serious homicide-by-vehicle charges.
